World Alzheimer’s Month

As published in La Fiamma, L’Angolo Della Terza Eta 12/9/2013

September is World Alzheimer’s Month.

The international campaign, which is now in its second year, aims to raise awareness and challenge stigma around dementia.

The theme for World Alzheimer’s Month 2013 is “Dementia: A Journey of Care”. Organisations and individuals in Australia and around the globe will be raising awareness about dementia and the care required by people throughout the course of the condition.

Named after neurologist Alois Alzheimer, the disease causes progressive damage to the brain. Activities for World Alzheimer’s Month will focus on reducing the stigma which is associated with dementia and making communities more dementia- friendly.

Alzheimer’s Australia is the peak body providing support and advocacy for the more than 321,000 Australians living with dementia. Alzheimer’s Australia is a federation of State and Territory member Associations, incorporated in New South Wales.

Nationwide, there are a range of activities lined up during the month, including “Morning Tea” events and Memory Walks.

Alzheimer’s Australia NSW is also promoting Dementia Awareness Week 2013 which will take place from 16 to 22 September, to coincide with World Alzheimer’s Day on September 21st. The theme for 2013 is “Connect the Dots” and will focus on:

  • Promoting brain- healthy lifestyles- a positive message linking body, brain and heart fitness
  • Promoting awareness of memory loss and dementia and where to get help
  • Promoting early detection and timely diagnosis
